Brien has always been best known for his work in the Pop/Rock fields of music however his career as a musician has led him through many musical genres.
He played double bass in the Newcastle Conservatorium Orchestra and the Sydney Opera House Theatre Orchestra.
Brien worked for a number of years as music director for many Warner Chappell Music Publishings newly signed country music artists. In this roll Brien would play Guitar, Piano and Electric Bass. He also worked in the Tamworth Country Music Live to Air Showband.
In the popular music world Brien wrote Australian charting song Loveland for 80’s band The Raiding Party. His 90’s group Circuslife received high acclaim from the music industry but collapsed before a record was completed. Brien has worked with international artists such as Keith Urban, LeAnn Rimes, Suzie Quatro, Fastball, Mike Peters, and Slim Jim Phantom (The Stray Cats) to name a few.
His last Australian band, The Retro Rockets headlined every major Rock n Roll and Rockabilly festival in Australia and New Zealand, recorded 5 studio albums and 1 live album. Brien wrote all the songs for this band and was the lead vocalist/guitarist.
As a writer/composer Brien studied classical composition with highly acclaimed Australian composer Nigel Butterley and harmony arrangement with Conservatorium principle Harold Lobb. He has written works for chamber orchestra that were commissioned and received public performances sharing the program with leading Australian Composers.
Brien studied and completed a degree course music education at Newcastle University He also has completed Advanced Diploma courses in Music Production/Technology, Workplace Training and Assessing and Music Business.
Brien has conducted music technology training workshops for high school teachers at the Hunter TAFE Institute and created the Higher School Certificate talent development program linking advanced senior high school music students with TAFE and University education programs. Brien is also an active member of the Creative Arts Program Validation team at tertiary institutions in his region. Brien worked at Callaghan College Jesmond, in Newcastle Australia since 2002, teaching music education and music industry certificate 2/3.
Moving to America in 2014, Australian musician, educator, composer and performer Brien McVernon has made Rahway New Jersey his new home. His passion for the arts and arts education made Rahway Arts District an easy fit for his skills. Living 12 miles from Manhattan and having access to some of the best music and related arts in the world has been a pursuit of Brien’s for many years. Having been issued an Australian Artist with an Exceptional Talent visa, this pursuit became a reality.
Throughout 2015 - 2016 Brien has been performoring in Australia, New Zealand, The USA and Aruba. Now residing in Newcastle Australia again to be closer to family, he still ventures across the globe and expanding his fan base.
2018 Has seen a return to his Rock n Roll roots with a new solo record "The New Adventures Of Captain Retro". This is a collection of original songs reflecting the many original influences in Briens Rock Music life.
On top of his work as a musician and music educator, Brien Mcvernon works and raises funds for the American based charity The Love Hope Strength Foundation (www.lovehopestrength.org). Love Hope Strength is the largest rock music cancer charity in the world. Brien puts on public events to raise money and awareness for the foundation, plays shows all over the world and Climbs Mountains to play at the summit as a symbolic gesture of the climb to recovery.
